'Caramel': Sweet sting

Caramel gets its title from a burnt sugar, rubbery concoction used like wax to remove body hair. Sweet to taste, but rendering a nasty sting to the skin when it tears out hairs by the roots, this caramel makes a metaphor for the experiences of the women who work in and patronize a Beirut beauty salon called Si Belle.

Director Nadine Labaki plays Layale, a Christian who lives at home with her parents who is having an affair with a married man.

The pleasure she derives from their midday trysts in her car is tinged with the pain of finding out how happy a family life he has.
