NAPLES, Fla. — The time has come for Cliff Fletcher to play the heavy with Mats Sundin.
Before the NHL's trade deadline arrives at 3 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Fletcher has to summon Sundin to a meeting. He has to tell Sundin that, as the interim general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, it is his responsibility to realize as much as he can from the assets of a failing hockey team.
He has to say: "Mats, I know you feel an intense loyalty to the Leafs and do not want to play anywhere else. But the time has come for you to do something for the Leafs by waiving the no-trade clause in your contract."
