TORONTO — Tensions between Ottawa and Ontario flared up on a new front yesterday, with the Harper government accusing Premier Dalton McGuinty of running a "sponsorship-style" slush fund.
The federal government launched a fresh attack on the same day Mr. McGuinty and his Finance Minister made efforts to end a highly public fight with Ottawa over their management of the Ontario economy.
Just as Mr. McGuinty was attempting to end one dispute, he may have triggered the latest one by warning the federal government not to take a short-sighted approach with its controversial immigration bill. In response to questions at a news conference in Ottawa, he expressed concerns that the bill could favour skilled immigrants at the expense of unskilled ones. He noted that his own ancestors were unskilled workers.
