Rose Bowl winner chose right cords

WHEN it came time to choose between her two favourite instruments, Jessica Strong decided to focus on the cords she was born with.

"I found practising piano for three hours every day kind of lonely," says the Winnipeg Music Festival's top vocalist. "Voice just seemed like it would be more fun."

Strong, 21, was presented with the Rose Bowl trophy Saturday at the Winnipeg Art Gallery. The runner-up was Chris Enns.

Strong's winning pieces were the aria Obeissons quand leur voix from Jules Massenet's opera, Manon, and Gustav Mahler's Um Mitternacht.

She also won the Great-West Life Scholarship and the Reg Hugo Trophy for the Most Outstanding Performance of an Opera Aria by a Grade A or Honours Level Vocalist.
