Barrie mayor cleared in OPP investigation

An 11-month police investigation has cleared Barrie Mayor Dave Aspden of accusations that he broke the law by taking freebies on trip to China.

"At the conclusion of the investigation, it was determined that there was no evidence of criminal misconduct," the Ontario Provincial Police said in a brief statement yesterday.

The announcement does not name the mayor, saying only that the OPP had conducted an investigation into "potential criminal misconduct" by "an elected City of Barrie official."

However, in April last year, Barrie Council asked for an investigation of the mayor after it learned that, earlier that month, Mr. Aspden had taken a trip to China in the company of two major developers, Mario Cortellucci and Saverio Montemarano, both of whom contributed to his election campaign in 2006.
