CALGARY - Calgary will have a new downtown urgent care centre tomorrow morning when the Sheldon M. Chumir Centre replaces the aging 8th and 8th clinic.
The $90 million Chumir Centre, located at 4th Street and 12th Avenue SW, is expected to see more about 15,000 more urgent care patients annually than the old 8th and 8th clinic thanks to additional treatment spaces. The centre will also have more diagnostic capabilities, including an on-site lab and CAT scan, allowing the clinic to handle some cases that would otherwise be referred to hospital.
"We're trying to increase access for patients by adding more urgent care capacity," said Dr. Rob Abernethy, associate chief medical officer at the Calgary Health Region.
