E-mail users got first taste of spam 30 years ago

From the first mass unsolicited messages in 1978 to the 120 billion that are sent every day now, two things have stayed constant -- people hate them, but they make marketers money, Vito Pilieci writes.

Thirty years ago today, Gary Thuerk started something that still irritates most of us every day, everywhere in the world, every time we turn on a computer.

Mr. Thuerk sent out the first junk e-mail -- or as it would come to be known, "spam."
