Senators, Meszaros remain far apart in contract talks

OTTAWA -- As Daniel Alfredsson, Jason Spezza, Mike Fisher and Anton Volchenkov strolled into the Bell Sensplex practice rink Thursday morning for a pre-training camp workout, Ottawa Senators general manager Bryan Murray did his best to stay positive about the season that lies ahead.

Murray, however, couldn't avoid the one dark cloud hanging over the team - that defenceman Andrej Meszaros remains without a contract.

To hear Murray talk, there also doesn't seem to be much hope that the 22-year-old will be signed any time soon.

It remains a very real possibility that Meszaros, the Senators' top offensive defenceman - he had nine goals and 27 assists in 2007-08 and is a fixture on the power play - won't be around when the club opens training camp Sept. 16.
