Dion drops the gloves as match begins

WINNIPEG -- The Scary Stephen attack strategy lasted almost an hour, opening a Canadian smear season that will quickly cross all party lines and drag on until the expected Oct. 14 election.

St├ęphane Dion didn't wait for the writ to drop to drop his gloves.

He opened his first campaign as Liberal leader on Wednesday by piling on a prime minister he warned must be electorally vanquished to salvage the economy, save the arts, prevent food contamination and fend off the death penalty.

It was a brutal, nasty, at-times clever and surprisingly coherent condemnation from Mr. Dion, who had Teleprompter help to overcome his struggles with English.
