Eyewitness reports differ in 401 shooting death

Homicide detectives investigating the slaying of a man who was shot and ejected from a luxury car along a busy stretch of Highway 401 have plenty of eyewitness reports of the incident but few strong leads, a police source said Wednesday.

The victim was identified Wednesday afternoon as Dayne Rose, who would have turned 30 next month.

Born in Canada but with ties to Jamaica, where he would sometimes visit, Mr. Rose was known to police here but had only minor brushes with the law and had no criminal record, the source said.

In 2006, he was charged with failing to comply with conditions stemming from a low-level theft charge, but no conviction was registered.
