A crunch is coming to the Web, just as it's coming to every other corner of the planet, and as I survey the parsimonious new year, I sense we're going to be coming back to the question of costs — for better and for worse.
In the spirit of New Year's predictions, in all their dubious glory, I offer six things to watch for on the Web in 2009.
How are we going to pay for this?
For one thing, there are all those words. Lots of them are freely donated, it's true, but many of the really good ones come from people who write for a living, and have their cheques paid by the very publications that the Internet is busily undermining. This is not a sustainable business model.
